2018 Summer STEM Camps
at KU Lawrence Campus & KU Edwards Campus
for middle school students
Looking for something STEMulating this summer? Whether you are in the Lawrence or Kansas City metro area, we have opportunities for your middle school student! Check them out!
Students entering sixth grade through students entering ninth grade in Fall 2018 are invited to enjoy a week of fun and advanced learning. Think you’ve mastered one of our camps? Think again. All camps have new challenges for 2018.
Camp location, dates, and registration costs are listed with each camp. Registration fee must be paid in full at the time of registration, or a position in the camp will not be reserved.
Campers who enroll in both a morning camp and an afternoon camp the same week may bring their lunch and eat in supervised area between 12:00 PM and 12:30 PM.
We challenge you to design, build, and program a robot to accomplish an assigned goal. Ready? Challenge accepted. Campers will work together to creatively accomplish tasks and solve problems using LEGO Mindstorms robotics. Your imagination is the only limit!
Outside the Box
Calling all creative thinkers, playful learners, and collaborative problem solvers! This camp will offer campers a chance to consider real world challenges and work together to develop inventive solutions that utilize both simple and powered machines, pneumatics, renewable energy concepts, and more, using LEGO Education solutions. Imagine it, build it, share it.
Science of Spycraft
From ancient Romans to today, spying has incorporated the cutting edge of science. Come join us to work with secret writing, forensic duplication, code writing and breaking, tracking, and all manner of spycraft. This camp will cover sciences from chemistry to engineering to computer science and student teams will compete to out think and out spy other teams!
Sticky, fragile, flexible, fluid. How can chemistry be used to help us understand the properties, process and performance of the substances we encounter in our everyday life? Through hands on exploration and challenges, explore properties and ways to improve the world around us. Showcase your knowledge and creativity in the Materials Field Day Competition!
Proteins by Design
Discover the role of DNA and proteins in the exciting field of biotechnology. Campers will explore protein models, 3D modeling, wet labs, and computer simulations that demonstrate the production of fluorescing proteins by bacteria and analysis of DNA by electrophoresis.
Can you find your way out of the Labyrinth? Only if you and your fellow wanderers can solve the maze’s mathematical conundrums in this week-long challenge full of numerical obstacles and trapdoor puzzles. You’ll need a good calculator*, the help of your fellow adventurers, and a little luck. *calculators will be provided
Imagine... Design… MAKE!
The maker movement is sweeping the world. From clever lab equipment to unusual robots to 3D printed clothing, makers are shaking up every part of science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM). Build a device to learn about animals in the field. Create a piece of art with a 3D printer. Wire your shirt to flash a greeting to people on the street. Come explore the possibilities of making.
This could be the camp that jumpstarts your future! Computer science can involve graphic design, problem-solving, programming, cryptography, robotics, human-computer interaction, and even social and ethical issues in computing. It is critical for many careers, including those in healthcare, retail, manufacturing, financial services, arts, weather forecasting, and of course information technology. Experience how computing knowledge is applied throughout our world, and consider where it might take you! (code.org, 2018)
Get Your Game On
Who doesn’t like playing games? Better yet, who doesn’t like winning games? Learn winning strategies through game theory, applied probability, and mathematical modeling. You’ll play new games and discover how to apply math strategies that will give you the advantage over future opponents.
Camps offered in collaboration with the KU School of Engineering:
Explore @ Lawrence: The Big Five
What do engineers do? It depends on what kind of engineering you choose! Explore Aerospace, Chemical and Petroleum, Civil and Architectural, Electrical and Computer Science, and Mechanical engineering in this weeklong camp. Engage in problem-solving activities related to each of these engineering disciplines, and tour University of Kansas School of Engineering lab and research facilities where real engineering research happens!
May the Force Be With You
What did the Nuclear Physicist have for lunch? Fission Chips. Come radiate your enthusiasm when we put the heat on, sound off about magnetism, and light up investigations about atoms. You will be forced to play with electricity and magnetism, and all sorts of matter. Join in some serious and some silly investigations in physics, and learn about how physics is everywhere in everything we do.
Camps offered in collaboration with K-State Olathe:
KU and K-State Olathe are proud to collaborate together this year with our summer STEM camp offerings. Make sure you check out additional camps offered at K-State Olathe, extending the opportunities available to you this summer!
A waitlist for full camps will be offered with no guarantee of granting enrollment into the camp. Campers on a waitlist will be notified if openings become available and must pay the registration fee within 24 hours of being notified, or the next waitlist camper will be invited to register.
Refund Policy: Camp registrations canceled 30 or more days prior to the start of the camp will receive a 90% refund of registration. Cancelations 5 – 29 days prior will receive a 50% refund. No refunds for cancelations less than 5 days before the camp begins. To request a refund, please contact Kristie Parfet.
